Atmejdan Opening
The Archeological Site of Atmejdan opens today on the occasion of the Celebration of the Stari Grad Sarajevo Municipality Day.
Atmejdan Archeological Site is located on the left bank of the Miljacka River, near the Cumurija Bridge. The site consists of the remains of Bakrbaba’s Mosque, primary and secondary Islamic schools and a harem (graveyard). The mosque and the Primary Islamic School were built in the mid 16th century as an endowment of Alija Bakrbaba. Over time, the area around the mosque developed into an important cultural and education center with Primary Islamic School for boys (mekteb), Misrija’s Madrasah (Secondary Islamic School) and Kantamirija’s Library. After the archeological research, preservation of the remains of Madrasah and harem with graves was conducted, followed by the preservation and renovation of the mosque remains. Now, the archaeological site has a pedestrian bridge which facilities visit to all remains.
